I. eager ESL students cling to hot fliers Give a Penny for Haiti their moment to shine in a suburban high school that loathes them Port-au-Prince carried on hard cheekbones with endless lines, canines and blue-black gingivitis one brushes her hand against me, says paper with eloquent pronunciation II. an emaciated hungry tot running a finger from a crunchy calloused hand on hot red dirt the stench of piquant fecal pits and mud cakes I always picture this me, a distant life ago, remorseful but detached from my birthplace now in ruins
